The role of the teacher in the Montessori classroom is to observe the child as an individual and guide his/her journey of self-discovery. Dr. Montessori learned early in her work that the education of teachers who are able to “kindle flame rather than just fill vessels” is not easy. The Montessori method is philosophically and practically different from other education methods. Our teachers are specially trained to guide children to appropriate activities when they need direction while also allowing them freedom of choice when a child shows initiative. The words “directress” or “guide” are sometimes used rather than “teacher” because the adult takes a different role in relating to the child from the traditional schoolteacher. The “directress” guides him/her to find the best way to learn from the environment rather than from the adult.
